Dates; June 19 – 23, 2024
Location: 67 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn
An eclectic mix of traditional and unconventional art forms promises to make Satellite Art Show a must-visit event for anyone interested in the cutting edge of contemporary art. The show has transformed a 5-story warehouse into a vibrant art mecca. This event promises an immersive experience for art enthusiasts, collectors, and curious visitors alike.
In a bold and provocative display, Elsa Marie Keefe will present "The Naked Gallerist." This installation combines performance art with visual elements, as Keefe engages in interpretive dance and movement, interacting with natural materials like dirt. Her nude performance will take place in front of a massive 12x15' mixed media piece titled "The Most Dangerous Animals."
Another highlight is "Wishing Well," presented by Tiger Strikes Asteroid, a multi-city art collective. This exhibition explores themes of longing and decision-making in an ever-changing world, featuring works by artists Mauro Barreto, SiSi Chen, Joseph Smolin, and Leah Smolin.
Dates: June 20 – August 2, 2024
Location: Skarstedt Gallery, 20 East 79th St, New York, NY
Times: Tuesday – Saturday: 9:30am – 6pm
Skarstedt Gallery presents its first exhibition of Spanish artist Secundino Hernández, marking his solo debut in New York. The show features new works from Hernández's acclaimed "Washed" paintings series, which he began in 2016.
These paintings represent Hernández's exploration of painting's essence, emphasizing line, color, gesture, and application. His work challenges traditional classifications of painting, blending various techniques into a cohesive artistic statement.
The new pieces showcase a more dynamic and mature approach, combining calligraphic trees and color fields within his innovative washed paintings. The artist's use of bright, luminous colors and meditative brushstrokes adds a fresh dimension to the series.
Hernández's process involves covering the canvas with paint, then partially erasing it using a pressure washer. This technique creates a turbulent effect reminiscent of Action Painting or Yves Klein's fire paintings. The result is a tension between control and chaos, addition and subtraction.
While compositions are often planned, color choices are intuitive, and the washing process leaves no room for revision. This element of chance evokes artists like Jean Arp or Ellsworth Kelly, inviting unexpected revelations and encouraging viewers to discover new ways of seeing.
Dates: June 21- August 2, 2024
Location: Luhring Augustine Chelsea, 531 West 24th Street, New York, NY 10011
Opening Times: Tuesday – Saturday, 10am – 6pm
Luhring Augustine's "Patterns" exhibition, spanning both Chelsea and Tribeca galleries, showcases over twenty artists exploring pattern as a multifaceted concept in art. This cross- generational group works across various media, including painting, weaving, quilt-making, mosaic, and sculpture.
The exhibition highlights artists who embrace interruptions and deviations from prescribed forms, opening new avenues for creation and perception. Examples range from Kim MacConnel's "bedsheet paintings" to Emily Kraus's process-driven abstractions created with custom-made tools.
Many featured artists explore the concept of "slippage" in patterns. Christopher Wool's early works focus on small imperfections in mechanized processes, while Ryan Mrozowski's paintings
juxtapose symmetry and asymmetry. Jeremy Moon and Tauba Auerbach play with geometric forms and grids, pushing the boundaries between organization and flexibility.
Dates: June 20 – August 23, 2024
Location: Timothy Taylor. 74 Leonard St, New York, NY 10013
Opening Times: Tuesday – Friday 10am – 6pm, Saturday 11am – 6pm
Timothy Taylor's "Dog Days of Summer" exhibition celebrates the enduring presence of dogs in art history. Featuring over fifty works, the show explores canines as muses, metaphors, and companions to artists. From ancient cave paintings to the works of masters like Titian and Picasso, dogs have been a constant in visual culture for millennia.
The exhibition showcases diverse contemporary interpretations of this timeless subject. Sean Landers' "Yellow Lab" (2022) offers a detailed seaside portrait, while new works by Hilary Pecis, Jesse Mockrin, and Ann Craven provide fresh perspectives. Pecis's "Mango" (2024) places a small dog amid vibrant domestic patterns, Mockrin's "Pearl" (2024) draws parallels between canine and human forms, and Craven's "Magic and Moonlight in Night Field" (2024) captures a French Bulldog's physicality.
Other featured artists include William Wegman, Jonas Wood, and Louis Fratino, each exploring the unique bond between humans and dogs. The exhibition highlights the various roles dogs play in art and life, from loyal companions to subjects that reveal human nature and emotions.
