"To be vulnerable is to live, to withdraw is to die." This profound quote from the renowned spiritual
philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti serves as the wellspring of inspiration for Jeena Raghavan's latest body
of work. At first glance, Jeena's paintings—which tower impressively, especially considering the artist's
petite stature—might not immediately strike the viewer as deeply intellectual. Their vibrant hues and
captivating textures initially suggest a more lighthearted approach.
Similarly, Jeena herself, with her friendly demeanor, effervescent personality, and the striking red dress
she wore for our interview, might not immediately betray the depth of her artistic vision. However, both
the artist and her creations reveal layers of complexity and profundity that reward closer inspection and
thoughtful engagement. From her early beginnings in London to her current status as a rising star in
New York's art scene, Jeena's journey is a testament to the power of creativity, resilience, and
embracing one's unique perspective.
Jeena's artistic odyssey began in London, where at the tender age of 13, she made her mark with a sold
out solo exhibition. This debut featured a series of paintings based on Ganesh, the elephant
god in Hindu mythology, known for symbolizing wisdom, understanding, and intellect. With a playful
twist, Jeena depicted Ganesh in contemporary settings—listening to music on an iPod or donning a
classic British trench coat. This early work not only showcased her technical skill but also hinted at the
cultural bridging that would become a hallmark of her artistic vision.
Following her London debut, Jeena's path took her to India, immersing her in the rich cultural tapestry
that would continue to influence her work. The next significant step in her artistic development came
with a move to New York, where she pursued her undergraduate degree in Fine Art at the prestigious
Parsons School of Design. This formal education provided her with the tools to refine her craft and
explore new dimensions of her creativity.
Post-graduation, Jeena's journey took an interesting turn as she gained valuable experience in the art
world through her work at Christie's auction house. This exposure to the business side of art
undoubtedly contributed to her understanding of the industry. In a brief but notable detour, she also
experimented with fashion, creating painted illustrations on denim. However, the allure of fine art and
painting proved irresistible, drawing her back to her true passion.
In a bold move that marks the beginning of her professional artistic career, Jeena decided to commit to
painting full-time in the fall of 2020. Since then, her dedication has been evident in her prolific output,
with her work being exhibited every month since making this pivotal decision.
Jeena's talent has not gone unnoticed, with several galleries featuring her work in recent months. Notable exhibitions include showings at Landmark Art Space, Revelation Gallery, Saphira & Ventura gallery and Lavan Chelsea in New York. Her international appeal was affirmed with her Spanish debut at the Santana Art Gallery in Madrid in June 2024. A particularly significant achievement was the selection of her painting for the cover of the Indiaspora impact report, which she proudly presented at the Indian Consulate in New York, further cementing her status as an artist bridging cultures.
Jeena's work is immediately recognizable for its vibrant color palette. Her canvases come alive with rich
greens, purples, reds, and blues, creating a visual feast that draws viewers into her imaginative world.
The addition of reflective elements, such as gold and silver accents, adds a layer of depth and mystique
to her paintings.
One of the most charming aspects of Jeena's art is her whimsical approach to subjects, particularly
animals. Her playful depictions, such as a sassy cat with its tongue out, invite viewers to engage with the
artwork on a lighthearted level, often eliciting smiles or even laughter.
Beyond the initial visual impact, Jeena's work reveals intricate textures upon closer inspection. She
achieves this unique effect through the use of custom-made wood blocks, adding tactile depth and
hidden meanings to her paintings.
While Jeena's work is undeniably beautiful on a surface level, it also carries deeper symbolic significance.
Her use of reflective gold and silver elements, for instance, is not merely decorative. As she explains,
"The reflective gold and silver give a magical quality to things. I associate shiny reflective surfaces with
this." This approach adds a transcendent quality to her work, elevating everyday subjects to the realm of
the extraordinary.
One of her powerful recurring themes is the complexity of life and death, often represented through
multi-layered compositions. A standout example is a painting featuring a female figure navigating
through thorns, symbolizing obstacles. This piece encapsulates themes of human awareness, resilience,
intelligence, and the fulfillment that comes from embracing one's vulnerability.
Jeena's perspective on vulnerability is particularly insightful: "When you decide to be vulnerable people
will take advantage of you, but all in all it makes you very powerful to embrace your femininity and
vulnerability. You are living more honestly and being more real with yourself and able to enjoy life
more!" This philosophy is evident in her work, which often celebrates the strength found in openness
and authenticity.
One of Jeena's most captivating works is "A Higher Step," a painting that exemplifies her mastery of
color and symbolism. Rendered in various shades of blue—a color associated with divinity in Hinduism—
the painting creates an enchanted and reflective atmosphere. The composition features long trees
reaching skyward, serving as a metaphor for the perseverance required to achieve personal and
professional goals.
At the painting's epicenter, where the trees converge, multiple elements hover, representing the focal
point of one's desires and aspirations. This central convergence suggests that while there are multiple
paths to success, trusting one's deepest intuitions and faith is key to reaching one's goals.
Jeena's artistic journey, from her debut in London to her current status as a rising star in New
York's art scene, is a testament to her talent, dedication, and unique vision. Her work, characterized by
vibrant colors, whimsical subjects, and deep symbolism, offers viewers a window into a world where
cultural traditions blend seamlessly with contemporary perspectives.
As Jeena continues to evolve as an artist, her ability to create works that are simultaneously accessible
and profound ensures her place as a significant voice in the contemporary art world. Her journey serves
as an inspiration to aspiring artists and a reminder of the power of embracing one's unique perspective
and vulnerabilities in the pursuit of artistic truth.
