ABT’s 85th Gala: Spring Stars Brave the Storm to Celebrate a New Season and a Principal’s Legacy

Storm clouds hovered outside, but inside Cipriani South Street, spring had arrived—guests stepped in wearing vivid florals, sweeping gowns, and a shared devotion to ballet. The American Ballet Theatre’s 85th Anniversary Gala was a vibrant celebration of legacy, performance, and community. The evening honored the extraordinary generosity of Susan and Leonard Feinstein, the company’s highly anticipated upcoming season, and final chapter in the storied career of principal dancer Gillian Murphy.

The Arrival: Spring Fashion and Ballet’s Inner Circle

Despite the weather, Cipriani South Street felt like a season in bloom. Conversations unfurled over cocktails and entrances were marked by bold personal style. The fashion captured the spirit of spring—floor-length gowns with dramatic trains, voluminous floral dresses, and tailored menswear with vibrant accents. A goldenrod kimono-style overcoat drew admiration, as did the painterly pink floral worn by Melissa A. Smith, Chair of ABT’s Board of Trustees. The crowd, which included Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris, Misty Copeland, Cynthia Rowley, Karine Jean-Pierre, Indré Rockefeller, Lizzie Asher, Jean Shafiroff, and Sai de Silva, was equally engaged and celebratory.

The Performance: A Preview of the Season Ahead

The second performance in the program included an excerpt from The Winter’s Tale by Christopher Wheeldon, followed by the Sleeping Beauty adagio and a dramatic passage from Swan Lake. Additional works included Theme and Variations, Sylvia, Bach Partita, and Serenade After Plato’s Symposium—a beautiful arc that previewed ABT’s upcoming season with elegance and energy.

The most poignant moment came as Gillian Murphy, now in her final season with the company, danced the Black Swan. At 46, she brought depth, precision, and intensity to the role—reminding the audience what it looks like when a dancer commands both stage and legacy.

Murphy performed alongside an exceptional ensemble: Joo Won Ahn, Aran Bell, Isabella Boylston, Skylar Brandt, Daniel Camargo, Herman Cornejo, Catherine Hurlin, Chloe Misseldine, SunMi Park, Jake Roxander, Calvin Royal III, Hee Seo, Christine Shevchenko, Cory Stearns, Devon Teuscher, Cassandra Trenary, and James Whiteside.

Dinner, Dancing, and Devotion

Dinner was light and refined: black cod with seasonal vegetables and potatoes, and a beet and asparagus salad to start. While the beverage selection leaned heavily on Cipriani house labels, the service was impeccable—attentive and polished without ever being intrusive.

I had the pleasure of being seated next to rising dancer Tristan Brosnan. I couldn’t help but ask if he was related to Pierce Brosnan, which made him laugh. He shared that he first began dancing through traditional Eastern European styles as a child and simply kept going. The intensity of being part of the company is no small thing—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Dancers only get one day off during the season, and the responsibility is constant. But his quiet focus and clarity made one thing obvious: it’s the love for the craft that sustains them.

After dinner, the evening closed with a packed dance floor and familiar hits. The energy was joyful and genuine as guests, many of whom have followed ABT’s dancers for years, celebrated together in motion. Following the performance, many of the principal dancers joined the guests, mingling with supporters and longtime fans to cap off the night with warmth and connection.

And while it may not have been a fairy tale for my footwear, I broke a heel mid-evening, unlike Cinderella or Carrie Bradshaw who lost their shoe or Choo, I marched on, Manolo Blahniks in hand. The show, after all, must go on.

Event Highlights

  • Fashion that embraced spring in full bloom, from dramatic florals to standout menswea
  • A powerful preview of ABT’s upcoming season including Swan Lake, The Winter’s Tale, and Sylvia with stunning costume design and exceptional talent
  • Gillian Murphy’s unforgetable farewell performance as the Black Swan

Looking Ahead

With its 85th year underway and a summer season anchored in legacy and innovation, American Ballet Theatre continues to elevate the standard of classical performance in New York and beyond. The gala captured everything that makes the company extraordinary. Artistry. Elegance. And a community that shows up, rain or shine.
