1.Nirvana: My Journey Transcending Philosophies

Vikash Jha is an Indian-American contemporary abstract expressionist, with a East West multicultural vision that permeates his works. Born and raised in India, he spent weekends studying at a specialized art school, learning the formal techniques of the masters and finding his artistic voice.

His exuberant canvases with their brilliant color, cross-cultural imageries, and multilayered painting techniques are evocative of such artists as Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and Robert Rauschenberg. Underscoring his practice is his philosophy that "Art is my nirvana and I believe it could be the same for each one of us, guiding us through life's crests and troughs."

Opening reception is May 18 at 6pm.

2. Bree Chapin: Girl Dinner

Hazy figures are conjured from downtown bars and half-remembered parties. Haphazardly-strewn objects hint at careless nights. All of this, a waking dream in pink.

Bree’s paintings are known for suggestive imagery and delirious all-pink palette. She has spent years creating work in this single color, forsaking all others. As the artist explains, “pink is at once loud and aggressive yet hazy and dreamy. It’s punk rock and strawberry shortcake. I am captivated by the aesthetic, physical, and symbolic qualities of the color. There is a power in pink, a history—and it has never once cared what we think of it.”

In her latest series, Bree employs her signature color system to imagine scenes and characters nostalgic for the fleeting freedom of irresponsibility. GIRL DINNER will feature all-new paintings of the blurry spaces between risk and revelry, restraint and release.

“Peeling the Onions” is a group show of four extraordinary artists. The selected works present personal responses to a tragic legacy of our collective past.

Geopolitical events, both historic and current, led to an urge to showcase artworks that are reminders of catastrophic conditions, and ask the audience to have a moment of contemplation. The exhibited works, besides their remarkable aesthetic and technical properties, have a profound effect on the viewer. They do not serve as any kind of political statement, but a humanitarian one. The artworks are visual research on the aftermath of genocides and wars of ancestors, and the consequent transgenerational traumas. The artists address memory, impermanence, forced displacement, vulnerability of civilians, and the struggle for survival on the edge of man-created disasters through a variety of poetic visual forms.

The participating artists represent different generations. Three of them are descendents of Armenian genocide survivors, and one artist is from Indian heritage with a complex family history. The tradition of oral storytelling of personal and collective traumas are the returning subject of their oeuvre. The works provoke self reflection on solidarity, fears, belonging, endurance in crisis, and the ethical practices on what we can control in the midst of devastations that are ripping through our world.
