In the heart of New York City's bustling midtown, a unique artistic vision has been quietly reshaping the
contemporary art landscape for the past 16 years. The Saphira Ventura Gallery stands as a testament to
the power of collaboration over competition, weaving together diverse artistic voices in a celebration of
creativity that transcends traditional boundaries.
"Usually a traditional gallery works with only one type of artist, modern, abstract, classical. We like to
embrace different types of styles to create a dialogue," explains Alcinda Saphira, the gallery's creative
co-founder. This philosophy of inclusivity and dialogue has become the gallery's hallmark, setting it apart
in an industry often defined by rigid categorizations and competitive hierarchies.
Saphira's journey began as an artist herself, building the gallery's foundation through connections with
fellow creators from Brazil, Argentina, and the United States. What started as a network of artistic
friends has blossomed into a global platform hosting bi-monthly exhibitions on 43rd Street and
prestigious international events at venues like the Venice Biennale and G20 in Brazil.
The gallery's innovative approach to curation is perhaps best exemplified by their bold 2022 "Sports is
Art" exhibition, which transformed a Madison Square Garden skybox into an immersive artistic
experience. Through creative 3D art displays, the show reimagined iconic sports moments, breaking
down barriers between athletic achievement and artistic expression. This willingness to explore
unexpected connections has become a defining characteristic of the gallery's programming.
Their recent Venice Biennale exhibition, "Side by Side," further demonstrated this commitment to
fostering meaningful dialogue across cultures and artistic disciplines. The show brought together diverse
voices from Venezuela, Brazil, France, and the United States, seamlessly blending performance art with
traditional painting. Featured artist Odair Mindello's work, depicting birds in human attire, serves as a
poignant commentary on environmental consciousness – a theme that resonates deeply with the
gallery's mission.
Sustainability has emerged as a central focus for Saphira Ventura, particularly in their upcoming G20
exhibition in Rio. The show will not only showcase artists whose work addresses environmental themes
but will also facilitate important discussions about sustainable practices within the art world itself. "Even
artists need to be conscious of sustainable practices in choosing materials and techniques in their work,"
notes Saphira, highlighting the gallery's commitment to promoting responsibility alongside creativity.
While operating as a for-profit gallery, Saphira Ventura extends its impact through the New York
International Contemporary Art Society, their non-profit arm. This organization offers members access
to carefully curated collections and experiences worldwide, with a particular emphasis on emerging
technologies and artificial intelligence in art – further evidence of the gallery's forward-thinking
approach.
Liz, the gallery's art director and Alcinda's daughter, brings a thoughtful perspective to the curation
process. "Incorporating an artist's pieces from sculpture and paintings completes the story as it is part of
their autobiography. It creates a conversation between the works – the sculptures and paintings," she
explains. This holistic approach is evident in their exhibition of Daphne Anastassiou's work, where the
Brazilian artist's paintings and sculptures create a multidimensional dialogue that reflects her
background in psychology and meditation practice.
Perhaps most revolutionary is the gallery's rejection of traditional competitive models. "We believe in a
sustainable economy so we see others as collaborators," Liz emphasizes.
"If we all work together we can all win and see initiatives like sustainability or conversations around
technology in the art space move forward."
This collaborative spirit, combined with their commitment to innovation and sustainability, positions
Saphira Ventura Gallery as more than just an exhibition space – it's a catalyst for change in the art world.
By prioritizing dialogue over division and collaboration over competition, they're helping to define what
a modern gallery can be: a space where art serves not just as a mirror to our world, but as a window into
new possibilities.
As the art world grapples with questions of sustainability, technological integration, and social responsibility, Saphira Ventura Gallery stands as a model for how traditional institutions can evolve to meet contemporary challenges while staying true to art's fundamental purpose – creating meaningful connections and conversations that push our collective understanding forward.
